Labor Day is a United States federal holiday, celebrated on the first
Monday of September. Labor Day began in 1887 where it was fist
celebrated in Oregon. The core values surrounding the Labor Day
celebration are, economic and social contributions of workers. The fact
of the matter is that Labor Day represents the struggle which many workers
and unions fought for, so that future generations could receive fair
treatment in the work force. While most people celebrate Labor Day as
the end of summer, it appears as though the true essence of what created
the holiday has been pushed to the back burner. Therefore, we encourage
everyone to reflect on the days true meaning. When doing so, ask
ourselves what is it we can do to improve the jobs crisis in America,
and create a better situation for generations to come. It’s ultimately
up to us to take the steps towards making changes so that we secure a
better future for ourselves, as well as future generations to come.
Our new Grand Knight, Robert Devlin, who is also a PGK of our Council 9002 in 2006/07, has left us his first GK Message since his election on June 7, 2011: Taking
the reins from your worthy, competent and God-loving predecessors is a
bit like a change-of-command ceremony in the Navy, or in any branch of
the military. One is filled
with joy and trepidation. One
is both humbled, and honored. It’s
somewhat like a relay race—one is challenged to take up the baton, to
run with it, and to live up to the expectations, the accomplishments,
and the confidences of one’s immediate predecessors, and of
generations of those who have gone before. I
thank our previous Grand Knight, Terry O’Neill, and our other
predecessors, Brothers Larry Kreitzer and Gerry Hrastar and Gerry John
and so many others, for having done such a splendid job, and for having
done so very much to make for a smooth transition. I
thank Father Ettner, our worthy Chaplain and our wonderful PASTOR, for
being such a prayerful, supportive, and inspiring presence.
Father Ettner is a good priest and a worthy Brother Knight, and
we are pleased to pledge our support to you. I
thank our worthy State Officers. The
beginning of each Columbian Year is hectic, rushed and challenging.
They are expected to get out of the box running, and to be up to
speed instantaneously. Their
challenges are awesome, their can-do attitude is truly impressive, and
their willingness to help their Brothers in the Councils and Round
Tables is a wonderful thing to behold. We
have a wonderful organization. We
have a wonderful group of Catholic Gentlemen who make it work.
We have wonderful, supportive wives and families and friends who
help keep us focused. If
some of those wonderful people are no longer with us, we have their
memories and the assurance that they are in God’s presence, still
praying for us and supporting us. Without
that support, we would falter, stumble, and fall.
So a hearty thank you to you all. I’ve
laid out a theme for this Columbian Year.
I propose that we adhere to that ancient message found in Micah
6:8, where we have been told what is good, and what the Lord requires of
us, and that is to do what is right, to love goodness, and to walk
humbly with our God. It is
my prayer for all my Brother Knights and their families, and for all
members of Saint John Bosco and Our Lady of the Shenandoah, that we will
always follow the path God wants us to walk, as we love and serve Him,
and each other. In
all that we do, let us be encouraged by the words of Brother Ron Gorman,
our State Deputy, who looks out upon his 25,000 Virginia Knights, and
sees them “LIVING THE FAITH, THE LOVE, AND THE DREAM.”
So, let us step forward boldly and bravely. It’s a tough, often ungodly world that we face.
It often seems as if the “evil one” keeps scoring points.
Let us join the saints and countless holy and good people who
have gone before us. Let us say, again and again:
“Here I am Lord. Send
me…” On
that note, I cheer us on to another great Fraternal year. Vivat
Jesus!

Knights of Columbus Council 9002 Minutes of the Meeting on June 7, 2011 Under New Business: Grand Knight, Terrance F. O'Neill conducted the election of Officers for Columbian Year 2011-2012. The Nominating Committee print-out listed each nominee for each office. There were no contested offices, but the Grand Knight dutifully requested nominees from the floor. Since there were no nominees from the floor, the Grand Knight then asked for a motion approving the election of all nominees. Brother Rick Litten so moved, and the motion was seconded by Brother Frank Caesar. All Brother Knights present unanimously approved the election of the following officers for Columbian Year 2011-2012: Grand Knight-Robert Devlin PGK; Deputy Grand Knight-Dan Lane; Chancellor-John Alcott; Warden-Joe Butera; Advocate-David Fairbank; Recorder-Bill Davis; Treasurer-Stan Couvillon; Outside Guard-Karl Rosenbaum; Inside Guard-Roger Schmitt; Trustee One Year-Gerry Hrastar PGK; Trustee Two Years-Larry Kreitzer PGK; and Trustee three Years-Terry O'Neill PGK. Brother Todd White will continue to serve as Financial Secretary through September. Our Chaplain is appointed with the approval of the Bishop, a Lecturer may be appointed by the Grand Knight, and various activities/program managers are appointed by the Grand Knight.
Brother Knight, Todd White has reinstated the Yahoo Groups site in
hopes that our membership will consider taking part in the services
which it provides. Please join and take a little time to poke around the site.
I think it could make our lives a lot easier at Council 9002, and help you
get more from the our web pages. It’s
like an unused toolbox, jammed with new tools for us to use. There
is no charge to join the Group, so just click on the Yahoo link above...
Do not imitate those who deceive themselves by saying: "I
will sin and then go to confession." How do you know that you will
have time to make your confession? Is it not madness to wound oneself,
in the hope that a doctor will be found who will heal the wound? *-St.
